Method of Drug Smuggling in The World

Turkey is the biggest transit points for drugs in the world. Cocaine brought from South America or heroin produced in Afghanistan and sent to Europe all go through Turkey. Methamphetamine, produced in Iran, is sent to Far Eastern countries through Turkey. Meanwhile, domestically consumed hashish is produced in Diyarbakır and sold in bigger cities...

Substances such as Bonsai (phenazepam) and ecstasy are produced in Belgium, the Netherlands and Germany, and sold in Turkey. For drug dealers who control this multi-million-dollar trade, the biggest problem is the shipment of drugs. The prices of the substances depend on the amount of risk involved in smuggling and the origin of the drug. The reason why a gram of cocaine is as expensive as TL 1,000 is because it comes from Latin American countries such as Bolivia and Cuba, which makes the risk and shipment cost higher.

Drug dealers resort to incredible methods for the shipment of such “goodies.” The Zaman daily investigated the different methods of smuggling that the İstanbul Police Department's Narcotics Unit has encountered in the past two years. Dealers smuggle drugs using methods ranging from hiding them in prosthetic legs and souvenirs to spare car tires. However, no matter what method they use, the smugglers cannot escape from the 15 trained dogs that the Narcotics Unit has.
İstanbul Atatürk Airport is of critical importance to drug dealers as they use the airports in Turkey and Brazil to ship cocaine. In order to avoid being tracked by the police, drug couriers come to İstanbul after traveling through several countries. The police usually find these people based on international intelligence and X-rays.
Drug barons in Bolivia usually smuggle drugs via couriers. The couriers swallow the drugs that are packed in condoms or similar packaging. The timing is arranged so professionally that by the time the courier arrives at the final destination, the packages of drugs are ready to be passed. Unfortunately, with this method, sometimes the packages break and the drugs diffuse through the body, resulting in the death of the couriers. Sometimes, the drugs are made to resemble candy or souvenirs.

Afghan heroin and Diyarbakır hashish are usually shipped via trailers or other vehicles. Sometimes drugs are hidden in the roofs of trailers or in the gas tanks of cars.
Drug smuggling operations can rely on willing or unwilling couriers. In either case, the transport possibilities are seemingly limitless. Cartels and small-time transporters alike are driven by the high profitability of the drug trade and they will go to any length necessary to accomplish their goals. Here are some of the most widely-used methods of drug transport.

Legitimate shipping operations by truck, ship, and airplane give smugglers a nearly endless list of options for drug trafficking. They often just pack their shipments into normal containers aboard these vehicles. If they are worried about law enforcement searches, they can easily conceal drugs inside almost any product packaging. Pet food bags, toy boxes, and teddy bears have all been used to ship drugs internationally.
